Westminster Cathedral protected from fire using Apollo-based system
Westminster Cathedral has been equipped with a new fire
detection system based on Apollo XP95 intelligent fire
detectors. The system was supplied and commissioned by Technical
Alarm Systems Ltd of Southampton.
The Cathedral Church of Westminster, as the site is properly
known, is a focal point for the Roman Catholic faith in Great
Britain. It was designed by renowned architect John Francis Bentley
in the Early Christian Byzantine style and constructed between 1895
- 1903. Consecration took place in 1910. Over 8,000 people a week
pass through the building, of which fifty per cent are worshippers,
but the Cathedral also attracts tourists who come to see the
stunning interior. The décor includes numerous mosaics and use of
125 different types of marble. In addition there are priceless
works of art, such as the plaques illustrating the 14 Stations of
the Cross by sculptor Eric Gill.
Technical Alarm Systems supplied the
Apollo-based intelligent fire detection system to protect people
and property from the risk of fire 24 hours a day. The four-loop
system will eventually cover the main body of the Cathedral, its
side chapels and associated buildings. The fire services are
automatically alerted by the system in the event of a fire.
